What is Your Sign? A Guide to Warehouse Signage

It is crucial that medical oxygen be stored properly and identified through proper signage. Medical oxygen is considered a prescription drug by the FDA and a hazardous material by the DOT. 
All companies that distribute oxygen must have signage to identify the various locations in which the oxygen is stored within a facility. The signage should be legible and in a physical condition on which the message of the signage is apparent. Language used on signs may vary from what is presented through the use of synonyms or other industry acceptable terms. If appropriate, it is also recommended to include languages appropriate to your workforce in addition to English.
The areas required:
Signage for Oxygen Distributors
- Full – Cylinders with container closure installed and product inside. Cylinders ready to send to customers.
- Empty – Cylinders that have been returned from customers and no container closure.
- Quarantine – Cylinders in need of repair or other maintenance. Also known as dirty.
Signage for Oxygen Manufacturers
- Full – Cylinders with container closure installed and product inside. Cylinders ready to send to customers.
- Full Not Approved – Cylinders with container closure installed and product inside. Cylinders not ready to send to customers until approved by Quality Control.
- Empty – Cylinders that have been returned from customers and no container closure.
- Quarantine – Cylinders in need of repair or other maintenance. Cylinders may have failed an inspection during the filling process. Also known as dirty.
You must also post no smoking signs in the warehouse. They should be posted on all entryways and above the cylinder storage locations.
